Herky Jerky: characterized by sudden, irregular, or unpredictable movement or style
Gosh, I thought I'd made the word up but thanks to a Google search, I've found that it's a real term! See Mom? I'm only half as crazy as you think :)
Jaron will be 22 months old on Friday. All of his life he's done this strange thing every time he hits a big milestone in development. He gets the herky jerkies. When he was little little it took a few times of the herky jerkies to hit before we figured out what was going on. It would look like this: Life, moving along like normal (whatever that is) then, all of the sudden for three days or so our nights were interrupted with Jaron experiencing sudden, irregular and unpredictable movement. He would have a hard time falling asleep, and if he did he would wake up the instant you moved or tried to put him down. He would flop around in bed and wake himself up all night long. If we brought him into bed he would be a crazy man - flopping like a fish out of water but he'd be half asleep. In bed with us he would sleep best if he was pretty much laying on me at least partially. Then, just as fast as it came on, after a few days, he'd be fine. Life would continue on as before the herky jerkiness. Except - he would suddenly have a new trick. Sitting up, crawling, walking, talking, growth spurts - they all follow herky jerky episodes. We just got done with a herky jerky weekend. Hmmm! I wonder what new trick Jaron will pull out of the bag???
Do your kids do this? Is this like some crazy neurologically super-sensitive phenomenon that only my child experiences? I'm not talking about seizures or anything that causes me to worry, I'm just talking about herky jerkiness, you know? Anyone? Come on - somebody has got to have studied this in some fascinating college course . . . maybe not?

Ethan never did that... but he always gets SUPER clumsy before he enters a new stage. He falls down all the time.. misses his steps, bumps his head, gets covered in bruises... so whenever he seems to get hurt all day long... I get out a new size of jeans!
So far David has shown that he is entering a new stage usually by 1-either not sleeping well for a few days and 2- being VERY active and talkative (making sounds!) especially early in the morning or later in the evening - maybe these actions qualify as herky jerkies? :-)
Wow! Babies and their brains/bodies are SO fascinating! I haven't noticed any of this in my kids but maybe I am super unobservant when it comes to stuff like that...Can't wait to hear what the new trick is.
